Man hijacked and left on roadside

A man was hijacked and left in the middle of nowhere on Monday, after picking up two hitchhikers in Walter Sisulu Street in Middelburg.

According to a statement issued by the Middelburg SAPS, the man, who was driving an Avanza, stopped to pick up the two suspects.

The three men were travelling along the N11 (Loskop road) when the hijackers pulled out handguns and forced the driver to stop on the Bankplaas road. They then proceeded to bind him with cable ties and forced him into the back seat while one of the suspects climbed behind the wheel.

The hijackers drove along the N11 with the driver still in the vehicle, until they ran out of fuel at the Dennilton turn-off. The driver was held hostage for several hours while fuel was arranged and later brought to them.

The hijackers then proceeded along the Dennilton road before finally cutting the driver loose and leaving him on the roadside.

After walking some distance, he managed to flag down help and called his mother.

• The Middelburg SAPS are investigating the incident, along with another hijacking that transpired on Tuesday on the Van Dyksdrift road.
