Man drowns in mine dam

A suspect who allegedly ran away from security guards of a brick factory at the back of a mine on the Bethal road, fell into a mine dam and drowned while fleeing.

According to information from a security guard on the scene, they saw two suspects in the yard of the brick factory around 03:00 this morning.

Warning shots were apparently fired, after which the two suspects started running.

One ran into the direction of the informal settlement close to the factory, while the other fled up a steep sand slope, from where he then fell into the dam.

The water was so clear that one could see a shadow of the body in the water.

The diving unit of the police are still on the scene to recover the body from the dam.

• The water is so clear that one could see the shadow of the body on the bottom of the dam.

Some of the people wanted to climb onto the sand walls towards the dam to see who drowned and a policeman had to calm them down.
