Mayor Diphala Motsepe elected unopposed

ANC council veteran Cllr Diphale Motsepe was elected mayor during a special council seated at the Sydney Choma Banquet Hall shortly after 11:00.

Mayor Motsepe will replace late Mayor Bagudi Tolo after the latter’s passing due to Covid-19 complications.

Mayor Motsepe served on Mayor Tolo’s Mayoral Committee before he was elected.

The committee was disbanded immediately after Mayor Tolo’s passing, opening the door for Mayor Motsepe’s nomination.

A minute’s silence was observed for all Covid-19 victims ahead of the sitting which was only open to councilors and the media, alongside municipal officials.

None of the opposition parties, the DA, FF+ and EFF, nominated a mayoral candidate. The meeting was over in minutes.
