Video: Fed up with fuel thieves

Fuel thieves paying with counterfeit money escaped, but not unscathed, when a furious petrol attendant managed to throw a brick at the back window of the vehicle they were fleeing in.

Riana Joubert from Hassens Fuel Services, the Caltex garage in Cowen Ntuli Street, says they hope to warn other fuel stations to be on the lookout for the thieves.

Video material of the culprits have been made available and the public is requested to contact them if they recognise any of the suspects.

On Saturday 7 May, two young males asked for R300 fuel. Sparks fly after the petrol attendant realises that they have handed him counterfeit money. At first he tries to grab the keys from the ignition but fails. In a last desperate attempt to stop them, the petrol attendant throws a brick at the vehicle and shatters the back window of the Nissan.

On Thursday 12 May, a male driving a silver Volkswagen Polo stopped at the filling station. He asked for his car to be filled with fuel before he got out and went to the bathroom.

When he returned, he simply drove off, leaving the petrol attendant to cover his R590 fuel tab.

Garage management said that they did try to report the first matter to the police by phoning them shortly after the incident took place. It took police officers two and a half hours to come to the filling station. At that time the manager already went home.

He rushed back to the filling station when he was informed of the police’s arrival, but officers refused to wait the few minutes it would take him to get there.

The second matter was not reported.

If anyone recognises any of the suspects on the video, they are requested to phone Mrs Joubert on 082 323 4915.
