Confusion over Gholfsig shebeen

A legal notice which appeared in the Middelburg Observer two weeks ago and advertised an application to open a shebeen in Gholfsig has caused an uproar among residents of the area and resulted in the submission of a petition containing 300 signatures to the Steve Tshwete Municipality.

But it has since been discovered that the incorrect address was used to advertise the notice, and gave people the impression that the shebeen was to open at 5 Eitemal Street, Gholfsig, but this was a mistake and was corrected last week to show the business address as 2402/01 Lekoko Street, Mhluzi.

The Middelburg Observer Classifieds department confirmed that the client’s advert had to be re-advertised due to the incorrect information supplied on the clients behalf.

Apparently the residential address was advertised in place of the business address.

According to DA Councillor in that area, Jos Pretorius, residents of the area are still concerned despite the correction and they are not taking any chances.

“We have obtained a petition which contains at least 300 signatures and we submitted this to the Steve Tshwete municipality. The fact that the shebeen was advertised in Gholfsig still poses a risk that residents cannot afford not to object to,” he said. “I’ts in the best interests of the community that we place on record our objections”.
