Update: Protesters bring CBD to a standstill

More than 2 000 protesters staged a massive march from Mhluzi to the Middelburg Magistrates Court on Tuesday morning, bringing various parts of the CBD to a complete standstill as they sang and danced on the streets.

Although it is believed that the protest was initiated by the EFF, numerous protesters were clad in ANC and DA branded T-shirts and held up signs demanding land and services.

It began as a peaceful march in Mhluzi with about 500 people but as it progressed to town the crowd attracted hundreds of supporters and grew to an estimated 2 000 people.

Traffic Officers and SAPS were out in full force and closed off streets to allow the marchers through. Businesses also shut doors and sealed off entrances to prevent damages to their stores.

The protesters gathered in Van Blerk park just opposite court. According to reports, the reason for today’s unrest is because community members responsible for a recent land grab were arrested and were due to appear in court today.
