Fraudster found guilty

Christopher Duncan Mabasa (41) was found guilty and sentenced by the Middelburg Commercial Crime Court on Wednesday, August 17 for fraud. 

The sentencing followed an investigation by the Hawks Middelburg based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation as a result of an incident that occurred on 3 May 2021 at Viva Filling station in Carolina.

It is alleged that on the day in question, the accused used counterfeit fleet cards to purchase diesel at Viva Filling station in Carolina and to pay at the Middelburg Toll plaza.

On Wednesday, the accused pleaded guilty on three counts of fraud and he was sentenced to ten years imprisonment of which five years is suspended for five years on condition that the accused is not convicted of fraud during the period of suspension

Major General Mokoena applauded the investigator and judiciary system for ensuring the conclusion of the case followed by the sentence which will serve as an example to others who are still committing crimes of this nature. She concluded by saying that “As the Hawks we shall continue investigating and arresting lawbreakers without fear, favour nor prejudice.
