‘Black magic muti’ makes R20 000 disappear
Two thieves, posing as police officers, convinced an elderly man that he has been bewitched and his money is going to disappear from his bank account, which it did.
The Police’s Anti Corruption Unit is asking for assistance from the public in identifying one of the men involved.
The victim, originally from Bethal, was visiting relatives in Mhluzi when disaster struck. The elderly man recalled walking near the Mhluzi Mall when he was approached by an unknown man who spoke to him and touched him on his arm.
He noticed an oily substance on his arm after the man walked off. The victim was then approached by a second stranger, informing him that he had just been bewitched.
He took him to a nearby car where two men were waiting.

The men produced police identity cards and claimed that they were investigating the man practicing black magic.
They claimed to be in possession of something that can reverse the curse.
The bogus policemen sprayed the victim’s clothing, cellphone and R500 cash he had on him with an unknown substance.
They told him that anything not sprayed will soon disappear.

The victim was asked if he had money in the bank. After learning that he had R40 000 in his account, they convinced him that it must be withdrawn immediately to be sprayed before it disappears.
The victim got into the car with the two men and traveled to the Absa Middelburg Mall branch which was closed. They then traveled to the Absa Lakeside Mall branch to find it was also closed for business.
They finally found an open Absa branch at the O.R. Tambo International Airport. One of the men stayed behind in the vehicle whilst the other accompanied the victim to the bank to withdraw his money.
The elderly man could only withdraw R20 000 from his account. The cash was taken and ‘sprayed’ before being put in a black bag.
The trio then traveled to Sunnyside in Pretoria where the elderly man was told that he had to drink milk to complete the reversal of the curse.
The man went into a store to buy milk and returned outside to find the men, and his money, had vanished.
