Ten killed in accident, two year-old survives unscathed

Ten people were killed in an accident on the R555 road between Roossenekal and Steelpoort.

The accident happened on Sunday afternoon when a taxi collided with a Nissan Navara Bakkie which made a u-turn on the road.

According to a police report, the accident occurred at about 15:30 near the De Hoop dam. The taxi was carrying 15 passengers and a father and his two year old daughter were travelling in the Navara.

 

 

The impact of the crash saw both vehicles flung to opposite sides of the road.

The driver of the Navara was fatally wounded but his two year old daughter survived unharmed. Eight passengers of the taxi, as well as the taxi driver, died on impact.

 

 

Seven people were seriously injured and rushed to Jane Furse hospital for treatment.

On Monday most victims were identified, with the exception of an elderly woman and a small child.

• Norman Modipi (male) 37 years old

• Lawrence Modipi (male) 37 yrs

• Lydia Mafologela (female) 45 yrs

• Selatole Obed Mmekwa (male) 30 yrs

• Phumi Mashilangako (male) 26 yrs

• Stephina Ntobeng (female) 62 yrs

• Johannah Mafete (female) 56 yrs

• William Manning (male) 31 yrs

• An elderly woman not yet identified

• Two year minor not yet identified.
