Man arrested for fraud
A man was arrested for using counterfeit bank cards to make fraudulent payments amounting to R1.5 million.
The 33 years old suspect was arrested by the Hawks Middelburg-based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation on Wednesday.
According to a media statement, it is alleged that the First National Bank (FNB) investigator discovered fraudulent transactions at a fuel station situated on the Bethal road outside Middelburg.
Diesel refuelling payments were made utilising fraudulent bank cards, as a result, the bank suffered an actual loss of up to R1.5 million.
The FNB investigator engaged with that particular fuel station owner. While the investigator was busy interviewing the owner, the suspected person arrived.
The investigator immediately contacted the Middelburg Serious Commercial Crime Investigation resulting in the accused and his motor vehicle being searched.
During the search, three counterfeit bank cards were discovered and the suspect was arrested.
The accused is expected to appear before the Middelburg District Court on Friday.
