Hijacked Mercedes crashes during Flying Squad pursuit
Three hijackers who held an unsuspecting motorist at gunpoint for hours are still at large after crashing a stolen Mercedes in their attempt to evade arrest.
Chris Molekwa was hijacked in his Mercedes C180 on Saturday, August 31, at 20:00 after getting a flat tyre on the N11 near Rockdale.
In a previous article published on the Middelburg Observer’s website, Molekwa explained how he was forced to drive around for hours, overhearing his captors arguing over whether they should kill him, after they forced him to withdraw all of his money.
The ordeal started after three men in a VW Polo offered him a tyre, because he was without a spare.
Two of the men then accompanied him to a filling station near the Middelburg Mall, where he intended to withdraw R300 as payment for the tyre.
After paying the men, who he thought had come to his rescue, they then hijacked him and forced him to drive around for hours before dropping him off along the N4.
According to a colleague of Molekwa, a ‘be on the lookout’, which was circulated after the incident, produced results after the Middelburg Flying Squad spotted Molekwa’s Mercedes on the road without registration plates.
In their attempt to evade capture, the hijackers then crashed the stolen vehicle and escaped on foot.
According to Molekwa, he was robbed of an estimated R300 000, including the value of his car.
