Munga: Care Rider ladies in the lead
As the first ladies team ever to enter the Munga Equipe, the Nashua Care Riders ladies team one is making history with their strong lead.
Natasha van der Berg, Sanet Griessel, Lizle Rosenstein, Maretha Bezuidenhout and Karen Vermaak under the management of Thiesa van Rensburg and Tim Calitz are currently in first place on the Munga Equipe leader board with 864.1km of the 1 000km trek already behind them.
This lead puts them first among all teams, including male cyclists.
The Nashua Care Riders have entered day three of the stage race where they have to complete the 1 000km from Bloemfontein to Wellington through the harsh and arid Karoo within five days.
Care Riders team three are working hard on catching up with 840km on the clock, team four with 777.5km, and team two with 732km.
The Care Riders’ two solo cyclists, Jaap and Elmien Beyers, are still moving at a strong pace with Jaap having completed 471km and Elmien 470km.
According to videos and photos shared by the Care Riders, conditions are still favourable with no wind reported early morning and clear skies.
The Munga is living up to its reputation as the toughest MTB race in the world, with local attorney, Andre Brandmuller reporting corrugation larger than the “waves in Hermanus”.
