Accused human traffickers remanded in custody in Belfast

Two men from Mozambique are accused of trafficking a group of 39 people consisting of men, women and children younger than five from ZImbabwe and Mozambique to South Africa.

Two Mozambican nationals accused of trafficking 39 people including children under the age of five, will remain behind bars for a month until their next court appearance.

Carlos Bernardo Guambe and Gabriele Bernardo Guambe were arrested on Friday during a multidisciplinary operation by members of the Nelspruit Serious Organised Crime Unit, SAPS Flying Squad, Department of Labour and Home Affairs.

During the operation, law enforcers rescued seven women, nine children (under the age of five) and 23 men (all over 18).

According to information, the victims were brought into South Africa in a taxi from Mozambique and taken to a farm in Belfast, where they were subjected to forced labour.

The victims, who originated from Zimbabwe and Mozambique, were rescued in Belfast and taken to a place of safety.

The accused will make their second court appearance on July 27. The matter was postponed yesterday for further investigation, and the suspects were remanded in custody.
