Municipality on lockdown as protests unfold following arson attack on strike instigator’s house
The home of worker representative and strike instigator Kgosi Makwati was petrol bombed last night.
Protests are unfolding yet again at the municipal buildings.
Gates of the municipality is currently closed after sympathizers and municipal colleagues of Mr Makwati descended on the civic centre. Municipal employees have moved their vehicles from the staff parking area to avoid possible damages as the protest unfolds.
Municipal office staff remain sheltered in the municipal buildings, awaiting instructions from Mayor Mhlonishwa Masilela who, visited Mr Mawakti’s home in Ward 21 shortly after 07:00. 
Mr Makwati’s house is situated in Mayor Masilela’s constituency. The area where the attack took place is situated close to Mhluzi Mall.
Two petrol containers were found at the home.
The fire caused massive damage to Mr Makwati’s home and vehicles parked in his yard.
Mr Makwati was largely seen as the face of the recent municipal strikes which crippled service delivery in town for nearly three months.
The SAPS is currently on the scene where forensic specialists are collecting evidence. 
Mr Makwati cannot be reached and its unclear at this stage whether anyone inside the home during the brazen attack, was injured. Meanwhile municipal employees demand action from the administration, fearing further attacks.
Mr Makwati riled residents with his unwavering support of the two month long strike late between September and November last year.
He was also spearheading the strike in January. 
The situation is currently under control at he municipality with police monitoring activities.
