UPDATE: Two killed, task team member injured

Two men were killed and a member of a special task team injured at the Loskop Dam Nature Reserve on Saturday night.

According to information from a trusted source, five members of a Special Task Force were operational in the reserve on Saturday. The operation was planned after information from Crime Intelligence that poachers planned to target rhinos in the reserve.

Around 21:00, poachers and task force members were involved in a confrontation. The poachers opened fire and police retaliated. In the process two men were shot and killed and a member of the task force was injured.
He was transported to Life Midmed Hospital to be stabilized before he was moved to a hospital in Gauteng.

Items, described as ‘poaching equipment’ were found on the scene, including a hunting rifle. Crime Air Network Initiative reported that ammunition as well as night vision optical equipment were also confiscated.

Ammunition, along with other poaching equipment was confiscated.

Capt. Khanyisile Zwane, Middelburg police spokesperson, confirmed that two inquest dockets and one of attempted murder are currently being investigated by the Middelburg Police.
