Hijackers at large in Middelburg

With the high rate of hijackings and attempted hijackings in Middelburg, motorists should take extra precautionary measures no matter what time of day.

The streets are riddled with crime and the number of incidents are increasing on a weekly basis.
Hijackers surround cars and pull on the door handles to check if they are unlocked at traffic lights.

Another incident of attempted hijacking occurred on the corner of Walter Sisulu- and SADC Street.
A married couple was waiting at the traffic lights when the military truck in front of them was blocked by five men who rushed at their Ford Bantam.
One of the men tried to lift a crate off the back as another pulled on the passenger-side door.

Mrs Van Aarde told www.mobserver.co.za that another one of the men was trying to climb onto the back of their bakkie when her husband started revving his engine. The couple realised that the revving was not scaring them off, so Mr Van Aarde swerved around the truck into oncoming traffic.

In another unrelated incident, a pregnant woman, who was hijacked near Fruit & Veg City in eMalahleni last week Friday, was dropped off by her hijackers near the Van Dyksdrift turnoff on the R555 (old Witbank road).
After walking home, she was admitted into hospital after being assaulted. A sonar was done to establish whether her baby was in any harm and she was treated for the blisters on her feet.
