Motorists warned – Several protest actions identified

Motorists are warned to be careful when driving in and around Middelburg today, with several danger points where protests have been identified. Members of the public have reported the following protest actions in the Middelburg and surrounding areas:

Protests on N4:

Reports about protesters dumping a load of coal on the road surface and using trucks to block the road, have been received on various platforms. Solange Nicholson, TRAC spokesperson, has confirmed that at 07:53 there were protest action on the N4 between the Schonland and Highveld Wakefield intersections.

The road was closed and motorists are advised to use alternative routes.

A user on Whatsapp reported that the N4 was also closed at Ferrobank as well as at Khusile.

Van Dyksdrift and Old Duvha Road:

Protest action was reported on Thursday and continued on Friday morning. It started on the Old Duvha Road with reports received at 08:42 that it has moved to the Van Dyksdrift T-junction.

Hendrina Road over N4:

Yvonne Jansen van Vuuren repoted protests on both sides of Mafube Mine. She said that protesters blocked traffic on the Hendrina Road bridge over the N4.

She also saw a vehicle set alight on the other side of Mafube (old Belfast Road) near Wonderfontein.

Security officers on scene said that the protesters would only be active until a memorandum was handed over to the mine later this morning.

By 08:40 Mrs Jansen van Vuuren reported that the road was open for traffic with smouldering tyres along the road from Mafube to Hendrina over the N4.
