Post Office shuts down at Mall

Residents of Middelburg have reacted with anger and frustration at the closure of the Post Office at the Middelburg Mall - widely seen as a safer and much more convenient option that the Post Office in the Middelburg CBD, where crime hotspots still exist.

According to the Mall Manager, Mike Tammadge, they had no other option but to cancel the lease agreement following a delay of rent for several months.

The Post Office opened at the Middelburg Mall in 2012 and at the time was a relief for hundreds of people who prefer the Mall over the CBD. The Post Office is situated at the corner of OR Tambo and SADC Street – an area notorious with crime such as muggings, theft out of motor vehicles and smash and grabs.

A reader commented via the newspaper SMS line: “This is nonsense. It is so dangerous to go into town especially for a woman. Can’t they re-open the Post Office?”. Another reader said: “We need that branch to be opened again. You will not find that excellent service from the staff of the Mall at any post office in the country”

• Felton Monama, Infrastructure Controller at the Post Office, could not be reached for comment on the matter. He was sent several questions via email and the reply will be published as soon as it’s received.

• “Wimpy will be moving to the premises and open a revamped store with a modern, open-plan design. The new Wimpy will launch on 1 December 2016. There is an additional electronics and sound shop as well as a FNB ATM”.

And the current Wimpy premises will be occupied by a fashion retailer, as from 1 February 2017. Negotiations with the retailer is at an advanced stage.
