Update: Suspect charged with petrol card fraud
Kelvin Maccarthy, the man who staged a dramatic sit-in at his home at the corner of Koets- and Oos Street last week after he was surrounded by members of the Police and CPF, appeared before the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday and was charged with fraud, the Middelburg SAPS confirmed.
This follows allegations from owners of several petrol stations in that a stolen fleet card was used to purchase petrol at their businesses – and was only picked up after he left.
With the help of banks, garage owners traced Maccarthy to a house in Middelburg Central and when Police arrived he refused to exit his home and turn himself in.
It was only five hours later, following dramatic scenes outside his home as roads were sealed off, neighbours were warned not to come outside and Police Tactical Response Teams were on their way, that Maccarthy finally surrendered after contacting Pastor Corrie Mostert.
Police searched his vehicle and house following allegations that he was armed and was in possession of stolen property, but this later proved to be untrue.
Maccarthy was granted bail of R500 and his next appearance was scheduled for 17 October 2016.
