Video: Families want answers

Families of patients who died and were maltreated at the Middelburg Hospital, came together at the hospital’s gate this morning and demanded answers.

Some of the family members, like the daughters of Mrs Bets Claassen (who died on 17 April) and the grandchild of Mrs Lena Shabangu (who died last year in June) burst into tears when the proceedings started.

The people asked that Mr Pat Mazibuku meet them at the gate, but he refused to come out.

After negotiations with security, they said that only six people can go in.

Only Mr Marius Coetzee (a lawyer), Mr Wessel Basson (deputy leader, NCP), Ms Tess Riekert (Provincial Women’s League Leader, NCP), Ms Coleen Lamprecht (St Joseph’s Home for the Aged) and a journalist of the Observer were allowed to enter the hospital’s premises.

The security tried to take the journalist’s camera by force from her at the entrance of the hospital and said that no photo’s are allowed. Only after she gave the camera to a colleague, they gave permission that she could enter.

Mr Mazibuku thanked the delegation that they brought the matters of concern to his attention and also promised that all the allegations will be investigated.

Mr Basson gave the hospital a 21 day deadline for answers to the concerns and allegations.

• There is only a short video of the meeting where Mr Coetzee spoke to Mr Mazibuku about the problems at the hospital and where they demand that management must take action.
