Breaking News: Biggest bust yet at SA border

Another massive drug bust was made at a South African border post on Monday.

Col. Ronel Otto, Limpopo police spokesperson, said that border post officials at Groblersbrug followed up information about a suspicious vehicle after a lookout for the vehicle was received.

Police members from the Bulgerivier police station, situated 160 km from the border post, spotted and intercepted the branded Nissan NP 200 pickup.

They discovered R139 900 as well as $10 000 (US Dollar which amounts to R157 927) hidden in the door panels. Other hidden panels, behind the seats and built in on the back of the bakkie, contained 93 bags of heroin weighing 1kg each.

According to col. Otto, the estimated value of the drugs discovered amounts to R93 million.

The driver of the vehicle was a Tanzanian national aged 33. He was arrested and is set to appear in the Lephalale Magistrates Court today on charges of drug possession, drug smuggling and dealing in drugs.

This is the fifth heroin bust of this magnitude since March and amounts to a total of 291 kg or R291 million worth of heroin seized in the past three months.
