Update: Puppies burnt with hot water

The SPCA opened a case of cruelty against animals this week, after the incident where puppies and a bitch had to be humanely euthanized due to severe burn wounds.

The Observer reported about the incident last week where Senior Inspector Petro Oberholzer (Manager, Middelburg SPCA) went to a house in Hlalamnandi where a bitch and her 10 puppies were in distress.

Inspector Oberholzer this week said that it was not a passer-by who alerted them, but the owner of the dogs!

When he got home, he found that his dog and her puppies were injured and he phoned the SPCA. “The puppies were crying from pain and hunger and it appeared that they have been burnt!”

The owner of the animals told Inspector Oberholzer that it seemed that they were thrown with boiling water. The dogs were taken to a veterinary clinic, where the veterinarian found that they had been dunked in boiling water! All the animals had to be euthanized.

Senior Inspector Oberholzer contacted the owner of the dogs again and asked him whether he knew who did this to the animals. “He said yes, it was ‘n family member (a woman)!”

Criminal charges in terms of the Animals Protection Act were laid after she received a report from the veterinarian. “The police will now conduct a full investigation, and we are hoping that witnesses will come forward,” she concluded.

• Captain Khanyisile Zwane (Media Spokesperson) confirmed that a case of cruelty against animals was opened by the SPCA. By the time of going to print nobody was arrested or questioned by the police.

• The veterinarian, Dr Leon Connoway, said in his report that the navel cords of the pups were not properly dry yet, so it means that the pups were no older than a day.

“The pups seemed to be in much pain and were moaning a lot.” On examination he found burn wounds on the mouths and legs of the pups. “These parts were red and devoid of skin.” He mentioned that the wounds were typical of burn wounds.

• A video of the animals in distress can be seen at www.mobserver.co.za (warning: the video will upset sensitive viewers).

• A public outcry followed after the article appeared in the newspaper where people not only commented on the Observer Facebook, but also contacted the SPCA to ask for the cruel lady’s name “to name and shame her.”
