Man found in possession of 34 passports nabbed at Lebombo Border Post

The BMA’s commissioner, Dr Michael Masiapato, emphasised that they will continue to combat illegal activities and root out corruption that takes place at the borders.

Some Border Management Authority (BMA) officials at the Lebombo Border Post in Komatipoort arrested a man on Monday, August 20, destined for Mozambique, who was found in possession of 34 passports and banknotes.

The BMA’s commissioner, Dr Michael Masiapato, said the border guards conducted an operation that led to the arrest.

“Of these 34 passports, 32 belonged to Mozambican nationals and the other two belonged to Angolan nationals. A case of possession of suspected stolen property has been opened and further investigations are under way to determine the origins of the passports,” Masiapato said.

He also lauded the vigilance and dedication of the border guards in the successful apprehension and confiscation of the passports. He sent a stern message to the facilitators of illegal movements who continue to undermine the border control systems.

“We will continue to charge them criminally with aiding and abetting, as prescribed by the Immigration Act 13 of 2022. The BMA guards’ keen attention to detail and commitment to safeguarding our ports is crucial in our ongoing efforts to combat illegal activities and root out corruption that takes place in the border law enforcement area,” he said.
