Nelsville’s Fairyland Preschool all set for open day

Fairyland Preschool will be holding an open day from 09:00 to 12:00 on Thursday June 13, welcoming parents and prospective learners to experience what the school has to offer.

Members of the public have been invited to visit Fairyland Preschool on June 13, when it will be hosting an open day to showcase the school to parents and prospective learners.

The school, which is based in Nelsville, opened in 1989 with only nine children under the watchful eye of head teacher Bella Thamba (a Nelsville resident herself). In 1996, Janet Vincent was appointed as the principal of the then Fairyland Daycare Centre.

At that point, the school’s facilities included two classrooms, a kitchen and a small block of children’s toilets with limited playground equipment. In 1998, a third classroom was built to accommodate additional kids.

Three years later, a further two classrooms were added as the school grew in numbers. At its peak, it had 127 children, and in 2008, a second block of bathrooms and an office were added.

While there have been some funding challenges over the years, the school was sustainable due to the number of paying children, which gave them the ability to provide cheaper schooling to those in need. It became its own self-supporting non-profit organisation in 2008.

The school accommodates children between the ages of three and six, and provides them three meals a day. There has been significant improvements made to the playground and to the buildings over the years.

The kids get to go on outings and the school hosts four additional extramural activities. In 2020, the school saw a significant drop in registrations due to Covid-19, however, the standard of teaching still stands.

The open day on June 13 will be from 09:00 to 12:00. For more information, contact Vincent on 084 445 1254.
