The new VW Amarok packs a punch

When it was launched, kitted with a two-litre engine, the critics were all over it, but it has proved itself to be as tough and durable - if not more so - than any of the competitors.

VW refers to it as a multi-tool on wheels and perhaps that is exactly why, in South Africa, bakkies are so popular. Most South Africans are one-stop-shop people and a bakkie offers so much versatility and go-anywhere capacity that we just help ourselves but to drive bakkies.

The new Amarok offers a payload of up to 1.19t, 3.5t towing capacity, and an even better thought-out cargo box.

It boasts all-wheel drive and as many as five efficient four- and six-cylinder turbo engines to make light work of the heaviest of work applications. Add to this, no less than five equipment options and you are truly spoiled for choice.

In African markets the base engine specification is being offered: a TDI delivering 110kW. In New Zealand and South Africa, the two more powerful TDI engines even reach a power output of 155kW and 184kW. For markets where petrol engines are dominant in the pick-up sector there is a four-cylinder TSI delivering 222kW.

Gearbox options start with a five-speed, but top end models will all be fitted with a new 10-speed automatic transmission.

Depending on the spec level that you order, more than 20 new assistance systems are available.

With its practical controls and digital screens, the interior has been configured by the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles design team in a very functional and high quality way.

The instrument panel’s layout is clear, well structured, and ergonomically tailored to the driver.

For those individuals who want to customise their Amarok, a range of accessories like roll covers, roof racks and alloy wheels will be available.

It will be produced in South Africa and more specifications and pricing will be announced during the first quarter of 2023.
