Killarney track instrumental in kart racing success

There is a good reason why Cape Town racers have become the dominant force in CompCare Polo Cup, Investchem Formula 1600 and even in GTC and SupaCup. All of them being SA’s top circuit racing classes. It all starts at the WPMC’s Killarney Kart track, where that entire crop of province racing heroes cut their teeth.

Now, looking at the weekend’s seventh round Province Rotax Max kart races, the Cape’s racing future appears in very good hands too.

Strong fields throughout the penultimate round programme delivered great dices on a sublime late spring Cape Town’s day. Province Rotax Max karting veterans, Joseph Oelz beat Formula 1600 racer Jason Coetzee two races to one to claim top class DD2 honours. Michael Jordan benefited Kyle Visser hitting trouble in the final to steal third for the day with Gil Simoes fifth.

Conor Hughes took all three DD2 Masters wins to take that winner’s trophy from Marco Viegas and old man Johan Hamman. Well, all the Masters’ karters are old men, but Andre Steenkamp ended fourth from Niel Lambrechts and troubled trio, Neville Chapman, Jared Jordan and Brendan Lennox.

Ethan Stier took all three Senior Max wins to claim the day from Matthew Wadeley. KZN visitor Yifan shared out the thirds with Jaden Jacobs, with Zac Laden and Gio Hartman in the chase. It was a similar scene in high school Junior Max, where Reese Koorzen topped Ethan Deacon three times with Jude Stuart, Ashton Repsold and Oliver Roach in pursuit.

Keagan Beaumont took the first and third U13 Mini Max heats and survived a second race problem to take the day. Race 2 winner Matthew Chiwara squabbled with Jordon Wadeley and Sabelo Ntuli, with Dale Hobbs, Liam Koekemoer and Micro refugee Aiden Beaumont snapping at their heels.

Matthew Roach meanwhile continued his recent U11 Micro Max form with two wins to one over Michael Danks and Liam Wharton. Zach McAuley, Michael O’Mahoney and Ryan Falconer entertained behind them from Arron van der Merwe, Nicolas Lennox and Aston van der Merwe after Aiden Beaumont had a day to forget.

Last but not least, the Cape’s racing certainly is secure, considering the buzzing gang of a dozen baby Bambinos fighting it out on Saturday. Race 1 victor, Jayden van der Merwe’s win broke the tie to take the win from Michael O’Mahoney. First and last heat winner Liam Wharton similarly edged Zac Boshoff for third.

Behind them, Caleb Lingeveldt topped another almighty fight with Carter Cedras, Kyle Bezuidenhout, Miko and Mila Botha, Micah Corneilse, Slater Smith     and Tshepiso Modimosana.

The WP Rotax Max karting season concludes with the eighth and final round on Saturday, November 12.
