Saturday craft: Make a firefly from a recycled soda bottle

It's the weekend, so we're bringing you a fun and thrifty boredom-buster craft o keep your kids busy and creative!

Are you looking for something fun to do with the kids today? Why not try to make a firefly from a recycled soda or water bottle? This craft is easy to make and thrifty, requiring only a handful of art and craft supplies.

What you’ll need:

Recyclable Plastic Water Bottles / Empty Soda Bottles

  • Glow Sticks 
  • Tissue Paper
  • Cardboard
  • Pipe Cleaners 
  • Googly Eyes
  • Mod Podge or Glue Stick
  • Sticky Tape
  • Foam 
  • Glue Gun 
  • Scissors 
  • Foam Sheets

How to make it

  1. Cut 1-inch strips out of a sheet of coloured tissue paper.
  2. Apply a coat of Mod Podge to the centre of a soda bottle.
  3. Wrap the Mod Podge-covered tissue paper strips around the bottle. 
  4. Apply a second layer of Mod Podge to the tissue strips.
  5. Wrap three pipe cleaners around the centre of the bottle, on top of the tissue strips, once dry. To make the legs, twist each one around the bottom.
  6. Cut two wing shapes from a foam sheet. Attach them to the top of the bottle with a glue gun.
  7. Insert the glow stick into the bottle.
  8. Glue a pair of googly eyes to the bottle cap, then wrap another pipe cleaner around the bottle’s neck to make an antenna.
  9. Your child’s pop bottle firefly is finished!
