Volkswagen Polo Cup champion to be crowned at Cape Town’s Killarney race track

“We are very thankful for the organisers of the SAES and the Western Province Motor Club for their willingness to accommodate the Volkswagen Polo Cup at Killarney in order for us to declare a champion,” added Rowe.

A champion will be crowned after arrangements were made to host the final round of the 2021 Volkswagen Polo Cup series at Cape Town’s Killarney trace track after the Kyalami 9-Hour had to be postponed as a result of travel restrictions to and from South Africa.

“We are very pleased to announce that the season finale and championship battle will indeed take place,” commented Mike Rowe, head of Volkswagen Driving Experience. There will be a race each on Friday and Saturday on the weekend as part of the build-up to the Killarney 9-Hour, the final round of the 2021 South African Endurance Series. Leyton Fourie has a 17-point advantage over title rival Jurie Swart, but Capetonian Swart will have the home ground advantage which should result in a tough final battle for one of motorsport’s most coveted crowns.

“We are very thankful for the organisers of the SAES and the Western Province Motor Club for their willingness to accommodate the Volkswagen Polo Cup at Killarney in order for us to declare a champion,” added Rowe. Since it wasn’t possible to include the Global Touring Cars series (GTC) and SupaCup on the same weekend, Motorsport South Africa declared Bradley Liebenberg the SupaCup champion after the last round held at Zwartkops at the end of October.

Besides overseeing the championship battle in the Volkswagen Polo Cup, Volkswagen Motorsport will also make use of the weekend to run their SupaCup Polo in the Killarney Endurance event. Jonathan Mogotsi who finished second in the National GTC SupaCup Championship will be sharing his car with Master Champion, Andre Bezuidenhout. The third driver is still be confirmed. “We will also run our Golf 8 GTC car in preparation for the 2022 season, so this weekend’s racing at Killarney promises to be very exciting,” he concluded.
