Don’t let the festive season harm your child’s health

The festive season is the happiest time of the year but also a time when your child's health can take a knock.

With the current Covid-19 pandemic and the fourth wave predicted, parents already have a lot to worry about, without stressing over other health problems that could creep up on our children during the festive season.

Here’s how to manage the holidays if your child has food allergies, a chronic health condition, or suffers from obesity.

If your child has a food allergy…

If your child has a food allergy, make sure anyone who handles and prepares your child’s meals is aware of their allergies to avoid allergic reactions, which can be deadly. Be sure to read the ingredient lists on food packets, especially for nut allergies because nuts can be found in the most unexpected places.

If your child has a chronic health condition…

Taking a break from the festive fun to do your child’s regular health checks can be a drag. No one wants to check their child’s blood sugar in the middle of a braai. However, it’s important that you stick to your child’s health check-ups and medication schedule, even during the holidays.

If your child suffers from obesity…

Festive calories are real, and daily indulgences can add up. If your child is overweight or suffers from obesity, it’s important that you manage their sugar and fat intake all year round, but especially during the holidays when children are more likely to overeat. Stock up on healthy foods and keep your child as active as possible. Indulge children with your time and attention rather than calorie-rich food. Go for family walks together or play ball in the garden.
