New Lexus IS destined for SA in 2021

The Lexus IS made its first appearance in 1999 and subsequently, the Japanese manufacturer has seen more than one million units of the compact rear-wheel-drive sports sedan models sell globally.

The latest IS model has been developed utilizing various facilities throughout the world, even the new Toyota Technical Center Shimoyama which only opened its doors in 2019. While a great deal of emphasis was put on the driving comfort which has been admired throughout the IS’s lifetime, the new vehicle also features aggressive styling and advanced safety technologies.

Upfront is newly-developed and compact, slender headlamps flanking the Lexus Spindle Grille which features a new design mesh pattern. The rear mirrors the muscular theme and three-dimensional bumper garnishes as seen on the front and in combination with the straight-line-type rear combination lamps sporting an “L” motif, results in a very aggressive look. Bolstering the design is the addition of newly designed 19-inch wheels which compliments the wide proportions.

The IS model will be available in either Sonic Iridium or Sonic Chrome colours while the F Sport derivative will be available with a Radiant Red Contrast Layering external panel colour. The F Sport derivative will also feature a unique mesh pattern on the grille as well as a grille-bottom air intake, special 19-inch alloy wheels and a rear spoiler. The interior features a new touchscreen multimedia system which comes finishes in the chromatic colours used on the upper instrument panel.

Other technological highlights include a new version of Lexus Safety System+ which now boasts functions such as Emergency Steering Assist. The system not only sees the improvement of the lane recognition system but also assist in detecting daytime cyclists as well as pedestrians in low-light conditions and oncoming vehicles and pedestrians crossing the street. This forms part of Lexus’ effort to reduce and ultimately prevent traffic accidents and fatalities and reduce driver burden. Other new technologies include Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and Lane Tracing Assist as well as Automatic High Beam, Parking Support Brakes and Panoramic View Monitor.

“What we had foremost in mind in developing the new IS was to make it a car that excelled in communicating with the driver and, as a car with wide latitude for providing such feedback, would never fail in doing so, regardless of the road conditions or driving status. We retained the compact body and aimed to make the new IS a Lexus compact sports sedan that provides high-quality ride comfort while offering a high level of vehicle control,” Naoki Kobayashi, Chief Engineer, Lexus International.

The new Lexus IS will be available for sale in South Africa in the early stages of 2021. The range will comprise three model derivatives which will be announced closer to the launch. The new Lexus will come with a seven-year warranty and maintenance plan.
