Open air opera first in the Lowveld

Lowvelders can get ready to experience Bizet's opera Carmen underneath the stars. On May 26 and 27 the Lowveld Chamber Music Association (LCMA) will host this open-air spectacular at Umbali and attendees can be prepared for an extravaganza of note.

MBOMBELA – This show will host an amazing live orchestra under the direction of internationally reknowned JoAnn Kulesza. The production has procured the official Carmen costumes from the State Theatre.

“We decided to do Carmen because many people know the music from this opera as it is used in films and advertisements all the time. It is a good story with love, revenge and death – all the elements needed to keep a crowd on its feet,” said Walter Fourie, the director of LCMA.”The outside venue brings an aspect of fun to the proceedings. We want to create a carnival atmosphere with food stalls and wine,” Fourie said, adding that he is very excited for this new adventurous project.

Linette van der Merwe, who has sung with the association a number of times will play the role of Carmen.
Well-known South African tenor, Stefan Louw, will play her jealous lover, Don José.
In 2008 Louw made his international debut as Pollione in Norma at the Vichy Opera in France and as Radames in Aida at the Dijon Opera, also in France.

“This is a great outing for the entire family and an event that will not be forgotten.”

Both shows will start at 15:00 and drinks and snacks will be available for purchase. The tickets are on sale through www.quicket.co.za. Prices vary from R170 for the cinema style seats and R130 for table seats to R100 for wooden benches and R80 for pallet seats (bring own chair).
