Sticking to your New Year’s resolutions

Did you make any New Year's resolutions this year? Mine tend to be vague wishes, but this year I tried something different in the hopes that I'll actually reach these goals.

Happy New Year, dear readers! The start of 2017 means we can look forward to 52 weeks filled with possibilities.

Many people kick off the year with resolutions that they tend to forget by June. These usually involve quitting smoking, losing weight and getting fit and involve people swarming gyms and going on strange diets for a few weeks before their motivation fades.

I’ve made a few resolutions over the past years but they tended to be very vague and similar to many of the popular ones. This year I totally forgot about making resolutions until yesterday and decided, for the first time since I can remember, to make a list of goals instead.

I decided to make them very practical to ensure that I’ll actually be able to tick them off at the end of the year. They mostly relate to being healthier and more active (which is one of my ongoing goals), keeping in touch with family and friends more often, working on my hobbies and completing unfinished projects. I typed up the list and pasted it in the back of my diary to ensure that I’ll see it often.

Experts state that to stick to New Year’s resolutions, you need to be specific, realistic, focus on one thing at a time, be positive and give yourself enough time to reach your goal.

Make this year one to remember and stay positive by ticking off your goals as you reach them.

I’m looking forward to sharing many inspiring stories with you and keeping you up-to-date with Nkomazi’s latest news over the next twelve months.
