What is Innibos without this sweet temptation?

The Huletts' koeksister stall has become a favourite for festival sweet tooths over the years and 2016 should not disappoint.

The Huletts Koeksister Champion for 2016 will be crowned on Saturday at the Innibos National Arts Festival. Three thousand visitors to the festival will have the chance to sample the three finalists’ koeksisters from today until Saturday.

The baker who receives the most votes for the best-tasting koeksister will walk away with the title of 2016 champion as well as a cash prize of
R100 000.

The three finalists, Daleen van Schalkwyk, Marietjie Maree and Retha Skein, were chosen from hundreds of entries from all over the country after a rigorous judging and tasting process.

To enter, contestants had to explain what makes their recipe unique, tell their koeksister story and send in a colour photograph of their creations.
The judging panel then selected 15 semi-finalists in three categories of business, traditional and twist koeksister.

The judges were all in agreement that the koeksisters baked by the 15 semi-finalists were “extraordinarily tasty” and that it was “a bitter-sweet process narrowing it down to the three finalists, who each won a trip to the festival valued at R6 000”.

Daleen, Marietjie and Retha had to produce 3 000 of their koeksisters and deliver these to the festival grounds yesterday. It will now be up to the public to decide on the best-tasting koeksister. Read Muskiet tomorrow to find out more.
