While working on an article for Mother’s Day for this week’s Corridor, I thought back on the many gifts I’d bought for my mom, gran and various tannies throughout the years.
It started off with hand-drawn (and coloured) cards, inscribed with poems I composed especially for the recipient. As my pocket money grew, cards were accompanied by nougat, Turkish delight, chocolate or inspirational books and in the case of my gran, even a few wire-and-bead flowers.
I still remember going into the garden with my brother to pick a “bouquet” of pink bougainvillea for my mom and (a few years later) my dad’s SMS asking me to pick out a bouquet for my mom (as a gift from him), while we’re in town.
These days, I tend to surprise my mom or the other ladies in my life with a gift whenever I come across something I think they’d like. Whether it’s a scarf, a book on cake decorating or even a batch of brownies I’d baked, I love seeing their reactions. It’s a principle I also follow with friends and appreciate tremendously when it happens to me. (Books and chocolate rank highest on my list of favourite gifts.)
Since I won’t be seeing my mom on Sunday, she received her gift (a gift bag full of turkish delight) during a visit last weekend and I’ll probably call her or send her a cute message on Mother’s Day.
