Local beauty through to Mrs SA semi-finals

"This is an awesome opportunity, indeed it is never too late to live one's dream, I got to participate in a competition I have always wanted to which is the Mrs South Africa pageant."

MBOMBELA – A local beauty is among the Schwarzkopf Professional Mrs South Africa top-100 semi-finalists.

Jean Mohlala will embark on an eight-month journey that will lead to the crowning of Schwarzkopf Professional Mrs South Africa 2017 later this year.

This 29-year-old is not new to beauty pageants. She has many titles to her name. Among others, she was a second princess in the local Mrs Lowveld 2015 and a finalist in Mrs Mpumalanga 2015/16. She said the competitions have given her a chance to pursue her modelling dreams.

She was also queen of Miss Thaba Chweu Municipality in 2005.

On receiving the news of being short-listed, she said she was excited and nervous at the same time.

“This is an awesome opportunity, indeed it is never too late to live one’s dream, I got to participate in a competition I have always wanted to which is the Mrs South Africa pageant,” she added.

During her studies at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) where she completed a course in business management and in marketing, she also reigned as the university’s first princess in Miss TUT 2006.

She mentioned that while growing up, she knew she would make a career out of modelling.

“I grew up with a love for it and participated in many beauty pageants and fashion shows, but due to a lack of support and resources I ended up not going as far as I had dreamt with modelling,” said Mohlala.

The semi-finalists in the Schwarzkopf Professional Mrs South Africa competition will participate in community upliftment projects throughout their campaign. They will use their influence to raise funds for charity during March and April in preparation of the announcement of the top 25 at the CANSA Gala Dinner on April 29.

This mother of a four-year-old daughter, said she looked forward to raising funds for charities in the Lowveld. “I am an ambassador for Sunrise Women in Mpumalanga. The organisation acknowledges those who are making a difference in their communities through their humanitarian work. Charity work is nothing new to me,” she said.

Mohlala has a strong desire to groom and empower the youth to be greater adults, especially young girls who she believes have less knowledge and are negatively affected by their backgrounds.

“There are a lot of young girls and boys who look up to me because of my achievements. If I win the competition, they will see that anything is possible and that will inspire them to work hard in achieving their goals.”

She admitted that the pageant was not only about beauty only. She said the incumbent would be a woman who has her own goals and views of her role in society.
