Vlammies athletes set track ablaze

There were Vlammie superheroes both on and off the field on Saturday at the 2017 Mediclinic Interhigh.

Chiné Maritz was one such hero when she broke the record for the girls’ u/14 shot put with a distance of 11,85 metres. She did not stop there, however, going on to grab silver medals in the discus and javelin.

According to the media liaison officer for Hoërskool Bergvlam, Mandy Barnard, the standout athlete for the day was Sumari van Staden, who earned first place finishes in three events. She won the 800-, 1 500- and 3 000-metre events in the girls’ u/15 age group.

Middle-distance runner, Braam van der Merwe (boys u/17), openly expressed his glee at winning his two gold medals in the 1 500-metre and 3 000-metre races.

Jumpers Temilton Njabula and Jesse Kinnear also impressed in their events.

Temilton took home a gold and silver medal for his first place in the boys u/16 long jump (6,31 metres) and second place in the boys u/17 triple jump event (12,22 metres), respectively.

Jesse leaped his way to the gold medal in the boys’ u/17 high jump with a height of 1,75 metres.

Another excellent performance came from Shané van Heerden who beat all her competition in the girls’ u/15 javelin. She achieved a distance of 29,63 metres to land her the gold medal.

Barnard said all the Vlammie athletes made the school most proud.

“Our school was well represented and our new athletic wear was noticed in each and every race or event. We are extremely proud of each and every athlete who took part,” she said.

“The most important thing at the interhigh is not winning but taking part. The essential thing in life is not conquering but fighting well. We, as a school, burn with pride.”

She also commended the cheerleaders and supporters.

“The Vlammie superhero cheerleaders represented each and every member of our spirit team. All the practice and hard work paid off at interhigh 2017 and we are sure that this year’s spirit team will be talked about for many more years to come,” Barnard said.

“Hoërskool Barberton and its personnel presented an absolutely fabulous day, it was a well-organised and extremely well-planned interhigh competition. Under the difficult weather conditions with Dineo preceding the athletics day, we say well done to Hoërskool Barberton.”
