Juniors Banele, Bandile take a bow

Banele Shabangu continued to build on her steady progress, with a cracking performance at the Mediclinic Nelspruit Interhigh Athletics Meeting at Hoërskool Barberton.

The 15-year-old athlete clocked winning times in the 100- (12,65 seconds) and 200-metre (26,27 seconds) events.

As expected, she cleared 1,45 metres in high jump on a hot Saturday afternoon.

Bandile Mabuza (u/15) spearheaded his school’s contingent, despite settling for three second places.

Bandile leaped 13,05 metres in the triple jump for boys u/19.

He took the silver medal behind Lowveld High School’s Frank Muwayi, who jumped 13,55 metres.

The versatile athlete bagged his other two silver medals in the 100 metres (11,42 seconds) and 200 metres (23,82 seconds).

Elsewhere on the track, Karilota Zule was second in the u/19 200-metre race, falling 1,49 seconds short of the gold medal. She finished third in the 400-metre event in 01:06,21.

Barberton’s Corlia van der Merwe grabbed the gold medal in girls u/17 javelin with a distance of 34,35 metres, scoring 681 ASA points.

Barberton hosted the 68th Mediclinic Interhigh meeting.

Supporters, pupils and athletes will travel to Hoërskool Rob Ferreria next year.
