Karatekas display their skill at champs in White River

The kata and kumite action from these six participating dojos was fast and furious.

New World Shotokan Karate Lowveld held a friendly championship in White River on August 17.

The event saw the participation of six dojos (clubs) from the region – Nelspruit, White River, Sabie, Hazyview, Skukuza and Triton Shotokan Dojo from Lydenburg.

The championship featured two main categories – kata, a display or sequence of basic karate techniques against two or more imaginary opponents, and kumite, in which each participant engages in controlled fights against all the opponents in their category.

• White River Dojo emerged as the overall winner, securing 159 points with eight gold, 12 silver and 26 bronze medals.
• Nelspruit Dojo clinched second place with 158 points, winning 19 gold, 12 silver and five bronze medals.
• Lydenburg finished third with 143 points, earning 11 gold, 12 silver and 14 bronze medals.
• Sabie finished fourth on 61 points, winning five gold, six silver and four bronze medals.
• Skukuza placed fifth with 59 points, securing two gold, seven silver and eight bronze medals.
• Hazyview rounded out the top six with 48 points, earning six gold, three silver and two bronze medals.
