LowMed Running Club members revisit the sport they love

Members of LowMed Running Club came together at Nirvana Country House on Saturday to once again engage in a club run.

Saturday’s club run comes after the relaxation of some regulations of lockdown level 2 were announced.

According to the organiser, Gilda Mavromatis of LowMed Running Club, the race saw a total of 43 participants across all distances – in line with the maximum of 50 persons allowed.

Mavromatis reiterated that is was not a race, as there were no fees involved, but merely a club run to revisit the joy and camaraderie of the sport.

“We awarded prizes like T-shirts and peaks as an incentive to keep up training and a healthy lifestyle,” she said. The events included 21-, 10- and five-kilometre road runs, as well as a 12-kilometre trail run.

Even though it was not considered a competitive event, runners still raced against the clock. In the 21-kilometre race, Lucky Sibande recorded the best time of 01:59,30, followed by Sidney Jansen van Vuuren in 02:18,57.

Nelly Khoza was the first female to cross the finish line after completing the 21 kilometres in 02:27,03.

In a respectable time of 00:57,22, Andreas Malaza finished the 10-kilometre distance followed by Joe Schoeman with a time of 01:22,00. Barbara Harrison finished the same distance in 01:23,00.

The trail run saw De Villiers Basson and Karien Booyse finish first in respective times of 00:59,22 and 01:15,43.
