A python of about 3.5m was removed from a farm on the Glenwood Road outside Mbombela today, February 13.
This all started when a nearby resident’s dog had gone missing on Monday, February 10. Annete Myburgh said her neighbour had notified her about the dog, and she asked her gardener to help search for it.
“Our gardener went looking. They discovered the python in the grass.”
Myburgh called iSecure Nelspruit, who recruited some members of the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) to help remove it.
According to the MTPA’s Chris Hobkirk, it took four people to carry the snake from the property. It had a visibly extended stomach from having eaten something sizeable.
“The python was really heavy; it was evident it had consumed something really big. We assumed it is the dog that had gone missing,” he said.

After its removal, the python was released next to a nearby dam.
“If you find yourself in a situation where you encounter a snake on your property, I would advise you to keep an eye on it and make sure to call security. We wouldn’t have found it if the residents had not kept an eye on it – the grass is really high and thick in that area,” Hobkirk said.
