According to a provincial police spokesperson, Captain Magonseni Nkosi, a family was attacked at home in Shatale, Bushbuckridge, by three suspects who fatally shot a 35-year-old woman and injured three other members.
“One of the injured family members was brave enough to fight back and managed to disarm one of the assailants. In the process, a shot went off and hit the suspect,” he said.
Some neighbours and CPF members, also working as security guards, came to assist.

The CPF member allegedly took the firearm and disappeared while the others were securing the suspect.
“He allegedly arrived later without the firearm. The police, deployed during Operation Shanela, were summoned to the scene to establish the whereabouts of the missing firearm. The CPF member denied having any knowledge of it. However, after a short interview, the police were led to where the firearm was concealed. Both the CPF member and the assailant were arrested. The assailant is currently under police guard in hospital,” Nkosi said.
He said the police launched a search for two other suspects who had fled the scene after the shooting in a Toyota Hilux with no registration plates.

“According to information from the police on the scene, both suspects had firearms. The vehicle and the firearm, with police insignia engraved on and its serial numbers filed off, were seized for further investigation. Twenty-eight spent cartridge cases were collected from the scene,” Nkosi said.
The injured suspect will appear in court once he has recovered from his wounds, while the CPF member is expected to appear on September 16.
