UPDATE: Eight lions successfully darted and captured at Ngwenya Lodge

Reports suggest that the pride of lions escaped from the Kruger National Park on Wednesday morning, September 11.

A team comprising members of SANParks and the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency successfully darted four female and four male lions, and released them back into the Kruger National Park (KNP).

This comes after the pride had made its way to Ngwenya Lodge earlier on Wednesday, September 11.

The lions that are to be released in the Crocodile Bridge section of the Kruger National Park after they were captured in Ngwenya Lodge.

Although nine lions were initially reported to be roaming the lodge, only eight were darted and captured. According to the spokesperson for the KNP, Ike Phaahla, the ninth lion is suspected to have returned to the park on its own.

“One of the lions that was captured was fitted with a collar to monitor the pride’s movements after being released in the Crocodile Bridge section of the park. This was a challenging exercise that was executed with so much passion and dedication for the well-being of the animals. Thank you to everyone who was involved,” Phaahla concluded.
