Hazyview Pets in Distress raises more than R18k for furry friends

With the help of several good Samaritans, the organisation managed to raise more than R18 000 at the golf day held at the Sabi River Sun Resort, which will go towards sterilising stray cats and animals that need medical treatment.

The Hazyview Pets in Distress (PID) recently raised more than R18 000 at its golf day held at the Sabi River Sun Resort. The money will go towards sterilising stray cats and animals that need medical treatment.

This event was held on the same day as the Springboks’ rugby match against New Zealand, which proved beneficial for PID as many people came to the resort to watch the game.

As the Boks won the match, those in attendance were elated and put their hands deep into their collective purses. A company from Holland also contributed a large sum to the organisation. Visitors to the hotel from Cape Town and Phalaborwa also bought some raffle tickets.

“The visitors who won prizes donated them back to us to resell to make more money. We sold some tickets to locals. Our wheelbarrow, filled with goodies, also proved to be a winner, securing a good income. We want to thank everyone who contributed to our organisation as it entirely depends on donors; we don’t get any funding from the government,” one of PID’s staff said.

PID promised its contributors and donors that the money would be used wisely to help animals in need.

“All the money that we make on our golf day will assist pet owners who cannot afford to take them to the vet or sterilise them. We also use the money for feral cats and dogs to sterilise them so we can reduce the number of animals on the street that don’t have proper shelter or food. To sterilise these animals is very expensive and we depend on donors to assist.”

The organisation called on the members of the public to donate additional dog and cat food and to support its fundraising events.

It is currently trying to gather enough funds for food so that the full R18 000 made on the day can be used for sterilisations. There will be a huge sterilisation drive later this month, and the organisation has already identified five feral cat colonies as beneficiaries.
