Musical notes prescribed for a good cause

Another Lowveld Medical Arts and Culture Society event is set to take to the stage again - all in aid of a good cause.

There are many hidden talents in the medical fraternity that patients and the community aren’t aware of.

The artistic and musical skills of doctors and other health practitioners culminated in a R35 000 donation to Nelspruit Hospice last week.

This music and art journey started five years ago when local general practitioner Dr Attie van Wyk sat around a table with a few colleagues and shared his vision of a fundraising event that would benefit children with medical challenges.

The Lowveld Medical Arts and Culture Society (LMACS) was born and the first event was a resounding success.

The money was then donated to Pediatric Care Africa. What was supposed to be a once-off event in 2019 was rekindled in 2023 in a post-Covid era. With the financial assistance of Sun Pharma, last year’s event raised substantial funds. With LMACS’s donation to Nelspruit Hospice, the much-needed injection will surely impact the community of Mbombela.

Van Wyk told Lowvelder that LMACS has taken the leap to register as a non-profit organisation to ensure that the local community and especially children benefit from the lion’s share of the event’s funds. “Charity begins at home and we want to demonstrate it.”

The third instalment will take place on September 14. There are still tickets available at R750 per person.

Well-known winemaker Beyers Truter is bringing along Abrie Beeslaar, an award-winning winemaker from Kanonkop, who was recognised internationally for the Paul Sauer 2015 red blend. Beeslaar will bid Kanonkop farewell this week and launch his own Beeslaar Wines at the occasion.

GT Lundie, who recently won first place in the worldwide Chaîne des Rôtisseurs’ World Chaine Day Competition, will serve world-class cuisine.

The music programme caters across all genres, from classical to pop music like Coldplay and Billy Joel hits, mixed with a bit of Afrikaans and even a boeremusiek number, all performed by local medical doctors, specialists, dentists, dieticians and physiotherapists.

A limited number of items will be auctioned. It is a not-to-be missed evening and tickets can be bought on Quicket.
