UPDATE: Man shot dead in Mbombela during robbery is identified

The three suspects, who robbed the victim at a filling station in Mbombela and fatally shot him, are still at large.

The man who was robbed and fatally shot by three unknown suspects at a filling station along Samora Machel Drive in Mbombela on Tuesday, August 27, has been identified as Antonio Sitoe (38), also known as Shona. He resided in Ngodini in the Ehlanzeni district.

In a request for privacy to grieve, the family declined to give more details about the deceased.

According to the provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli, the suspects are still at large. He also confirmed that the pictures taken from the CCTV circulating on social media are indeed those of the suspects who killed Sitoe.

The incident occurred at 14:15 when the victim was accosted by the armed suspects as he was waiting in his vehicle near a certain store. “It is further reported that the suspects approached him in his car and robbed him of his money, during which time he was shot. The suspects are said to have fled in a Ford Fiesta,” Mdhluli said.

Lowvelder saw the footage of the suspects when they approached the victim in his car while he was with a female companion. At this point, they robbed Sitoe before shooting him and fled the scene. In the video, the car used by the suspects does not resemble the vehicle as reported by the police. The picture indicates that it was blue or black.
