The Mpumalanga Youth Choir has appointed renowned businessman and politician, Dr Mathews Phosa, as its main patron.

The conductor, André Oosthuizen, said Phosa’s unwavering dedication to the arts and his commitment to the youth of Mpumalanga make him an ideal leader and supporter of the choir.

“As our main patron, he will play a crucial role in guiding the choir’s vision, promoting its activities and ensuring that the voices of our young talents are heard both locally and beyond. We are honoured to have Dr Phosa’s support and look forward to the continued growth and success of the Mpumalanga Youth Choir under his patronage,” Oosthuizen said.

The choir is an organisation that brings together talented young voices across Mpumalanga since its establishment in 1981. It is dedicated to nurturing and displaying the province’s vibrant musical heritage and creativity. The members share not only a passion for music, but an environment of friendship and acceptance.

Speaking to Lowvelder, Phosa said he is delighted to be officially part of the organisation. He said besides running businesses and politics, he is passionate about uplifting young people, especially in his home province.

“It started out with me sponsoring their tours and being a support system that helped them grow. I am honoured to be a member of the choir in some way, because I believe in the impact of music in a young person’s life. Music inspires, heals and connects people. This is more than just a music group; it is a support system for the young people. I hope the organisation grows bigger and takes over the world with their beautiful voices,” he said.
