SPONSORED | The TailG: Three wheels are the charm!

It costs less than a four-wheel quad bike, and because it is electric, its operating costs are lower than a fuel-powered four-wheeler.

If you’ve been battling to find the perfect utility vehicle to make work and life on the farm easier, then the TailG electric tricycle is undoubtedly the answer to all your problems.

The tale of the TailG is a traditional entrepreneurship success story, with the idea for the three-wheeled electric utility vehicle originating from the mind of Limpopo resident Pierneef Smit. It started out in his garage, when he originally imported and assembled the vehicles himself on a small scale for a few clients in the Letsitele area.

As the company grew and word started to spread about just how useful and versatile the TailG is, demand quickly skyrocketed and Smit knew he had a gem on his hands. Since launching in South Africa in 2019, more than 2 000 TailG units have been sold over the past five years, and they now sell anywhere between 30 and 40 units a month.

The TailG was designed and modelled with agricultural use in mind. Smit factored cost into the equation, too. Costing only R35 000 without tax, the TailG is cheaper both in the short term and the long term. It costs less than a four-wheel quad bike, and because it is electric, its operating costs are far less than what a fuel-powered four-wheeler would be in the long run.

This quickly led to farmers and other members of the agricultural community realising the cost-effectiveness of the TailG in comparison to other traditional utility vehicle options. The TailG can also operate for up to 40km on a single charge, which is more than enough for most for a full day of operation.

While it did come from humble beginnings in Limpopo, the TailG is now well known nationwide with four warehouses spread across South Africa – Tzaneen, Centurion (Pretoria), Gqeberha and Wellington. It has also struck a chord with agriculturalists in the Lowveld as a number of local farmers and companies have purchased TailGs for use on their farms.

The largest has been Komati Fruits, which already has one of the biggest fleets in the Lowveld with seven TailG units, but has now placed the biggest single order in the history of the TailG, with 40 units delivered by the end of July.

“We would like to congratulate Komati Fruits on the order and acquisition of these TailG units. We know that they will prove to be a great success and of great use to everyone at Komati Fruits,” Smit said.

Smit also mentioned that he is the sole importer of TailG products into South Africa, and expressed his gratitude for the support of Laeveld Trekkers in Rocky Drift and AgriTrac Malelane, who are the only two TailG-accredited suppliers in the Lowveld. “They are the go-to guys for TailGs in the Lowveld, and anyone who is interested should give them a call to place their orders.”

Laeveld Trekkers can be contacted on 013 758 1233 and AgriTrac Malelane on 013 591 5503. If you’d like to find out more about the TailG, you can contact the company directly on 021 981 4457 or via email on info@tailg.co.za.
