Dwarsrivier Chrome Mine, Two Rivers Platinum Mine and Glencore came together to do their part for Mandela day.

As part of the Mandela Day commemorations and 67 Minutes for Madiba, Dwarsrivier Chrome Mine (DCM), Two Rivers Platinum Mine and Glencore in Steelpoort donated groceries, blankets, mattresses and shoes to Rehlahleng Special School at Ga-Mampuru Village. The mines also prepared and shared a meal with the pupils and the school management team. The handover took place at the school on July 18, and attendees included representatives of the three mines, teachers and members of the Ngwaabe Circuit.

Speaking during the event, a representative of the mines, Vincent Kgokong, said: “We find it befitting to help our communities to ensure that our most vulnerable are provided for, which will also help them excel in their studies.

“As the three partners, we believe in the importance of making a difference in the communities in which we operate. This initiative also gives us an opportunity to strengthen relationships with our key stakeholders.

“All of us remember Madiba very fondly, so you can be sure that Mandela Day will always be a big success and many of our less-fortunate fellow citizens will benefit from this initiative.”

Another speaker representing the mines, Tintswalo Kanyongolo, said they plan to visit the Rehlahleng Special School more often. “We can’t visit the needy only on Mandela Day. Let’s arrange to give back to these kinds of schools more than once a year.

“These donations will make a huge difference in the lives of the learners. These kinds of initiatives show that the mines can work together to improve communities. The local mines are eager to support the pupils as they are the future leaders.”

After the handover, the mines’ representatives took a stroll around the school’s premises. They visited the arts and culture classrooms where learners create reed baskets. They were also seen sewing school uniforms and tracksuits.

Rehlahleng’s management team thanked the three mines for the much-needed donations.

“We had several visitors for Mandela Day, and we appreciate all the gifts given to us. We will cherish all the items handed to us and we urge other local companies to consider us when donating,” the school’s management said.
