White River karate students kick up a storm

Karatekas from the White River Kimura Shukokai Karate Dojo have been in fine form on the floor in recent weeks, excelling at the competitions they’ve participated in.

A handful of karatekas from a dojo in White River have brought home a series of medals after great performances at recent competitions.

The White River Kimura Shukokai Karate Dojo’s stars took part in the Kimura Shukokai Limpopo Championships held in Polokwane on Saturday June 29.

A total of 95 competitors from Musina, Makhado, Polokwane, Mokopane, White River, Gauteng, Harare and Bulawayo competed in the competition.

The White River contingent was made up of five karatekas, competing under the watchful eye of Sensei Babsie Roos. Taking part in the competition herself, she won gold for kata and silver for kumite. Surika Dierks repeated this feat, also winning gold for kata and silver for kumite.

Carel Roos won himself bronze for kata and gold for kumite. Martin van Wyk received bronze for kata and silver for kumite, while Miandi Dierks got bronze for kata.

After her success in Polokwane, Surika travelled to Edenvale in Gauteng to take part in the Kimura Shukokai Junior Bushido Cup, a tournament open to all those born between 2011 and 2020.

It serves as a stepping stone for young karatekas to experience a tournament before entering into the more senior ones. There was a total of 145 competitors.

She received gold for kumite and silver for kata in her division.
