Lowvelder responds to the global call to action

Lowvelder will be doing its part in an outreach to the less fortunate members of the community. Read more about it here.

This year, to commemorate and celebrate Mandela Day, Lowvelder will be conducting an outreach, visiting homes and orphanages such as Betty’s Haven, Millennium Home of Hope, House of Faith, Love & Hope and Katoen.

The Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) released a statement on July 5 noting that Mandela Day 2024 will be celebrated under the theme ‘It’s still in our hands to combat poverty and inequality’.
Lowvelder’s outreach will take place this coming Thursday, July 18.

On July 18, the world celebrates the life of former South African president Nelson Mandela. The day is a global call to action that is celebrated annually aimed to honour his life by encouraging communities, organisations and individuals to reflect on Mandela’s principles and values.

The aim of this annual movement is to impact communities all around the world positively by contributing 67 minutes to volunteer work.

These 67 minutes are symbolic to the amount of years Mandela spent fighting for freedom in South Africa.

The GCIS notes that Mandela Day 2024 aims to combat climate change and food insecurity.

“Together we can change our climate trajectory by adapting a more climate-friendly lifestyle,” it said.

The GCIS’s goal for this year is to plant one million trees, 60% of which are fruit trees.

“By planting a tree this Mandela Day, we not only respond to climate change, but also to the challenge of food security. When trees are planted, the soil structure improves, creating an environment for fresh agricultural produce to flourish.”

The system believes this year’s call to action can be translated into suitable programmes. Below they share a few suggested activities for the public:
